Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, recently visited the La Liga Agrícola Industrial de la Caña de Azúcar (LAICA) in Costa Rica. This visit served to provide insights into how Costa Rica’s sugarcane sector has effectively expanded through the creation of value-added sugar products.

During the visit, Singh observed LAICA’s extensive product portfolio, which includes various forms of sugar, such as brown, white, powdered, and liquid sugar, as well as powered drinks, energy drinks, and cake toppings. The minister expressed enthusiasm about the potential to adopt similar strategies in Fiji, where the sugar industry is crucial for the economy and the sustenance of many rural communities.

The insights gained from LAICA’s operations are expected to play a significant role in ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing productivity, innovation, and sustainability in Fiji’s sugar industry. Singh’s trip also coincided with his participation in the 66th International Sugar Organization Council Workshop and Meeting in San José, Costa Rica, which began on May 27, 2025, with the theme “Building a Sweeter Tomorrow.”

This proactive engagement by Singh is aligned with previous efforts emphasizing sustainability, such as his participation in the ISO Council Meeting and discussions with international partners like Tate and Lyle. His ongoing commitment to improving Fiji’s standing in the global sugar market demonstrates a hopeful outlook for revitalizing the industry.

Through strategic adoption of successful practices and forming valuable international partnerships, Fiji’s sugar industry may emerge stronger, benefitting both farmers and local communities alike. This outlook not only reflects a commitment to the agricultural sector but also promises potential economic growth and stability in the future.
