Former Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) board member and prominent sugarcane farmer Arvind Singh has called for the sugar industry in Fiji to be detached from political influences, arguing that politics has significantly hindered its growth and stability. Singh, a leading sugarcane farmer from Yalalevu, believes that the industry must focus on constructive dialogues without the interference of political agendas to avoid further decline.

In his comments, Singh expressed concern about the future of the industry, which he described as being on the brink of collapse without immediate intervention. He emphasized, “Politics should be left to politicians. If you keep bringing in politics, this industry will not survive.” He pointed out that political involvement has historically disrupted the industry, noting that a failure to resolve present issues could lead to its inevitable demise.

Reflecting on recent trends, Singh observed that the sugar sector has faced numerous challenges, including a dramatic decrease in sugarcane production and farm sustainability. At one point, Fiji’s sugarcane yield plummeted from an average of 100 tons per hectare to around 47 tons, indicating a serious need for reform and improvement in agricultural practices. He urged stakeholders from across the industry to come together to explore viable solutions, highlighting the importance of comprehensive discussions that incorporate all opinions to foster a brighter future for sugar farming.

Additionally, Singh cautioned against relying solely on tourism for economic support, referencing the recent pandemic’s detrimental impact on the tourism sector while praising the resilience of the sugar industry during that crisis. He reiterated that Fiji’s agricultural roots must remain a priority and that a concerted effort is needed to revitalize this essential sector.

This call to action aligns with ongoing discussions regarding sugar farming in Fiji as authorities continue to emphasize the need for accountability and commitment among farmers. With renewed dedication and focus on sustainable practices, there remains a hopeful outlook that the sugar industry could regain its vitality and secure its essential role in Fiji’s economy.

Overall, the messages shared by Singh resonate with multiple stakeholders and raise awareness about the multifaceted issues facing Fiji’s sugar industry while also fostering optimism for its rejuvenation.
