Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh has sought to reassure the public regarding discussions surrounding the future of Fiji’s sugar mills. Following consultations with Chinese experts who have suggested consolidation of the country’s milling operations, Singh clarified that no final decisions have been made, and discussions are still exploratory.
“The experts proposed that a more effective operation could be achieved with one facility to serve the broader region,” Singh noted. He pointed out that the current Ba mill, which is aging and costly to maintain, may need to be replaced. However, he dismissed suggestions that this would leave Fiji with only a single operational mill.
He elaborated that sugar cane production has dwindled significantly due to various factors, including land conversion to commercial and residential uses, and the dismantling of the Rakiraki sugar mill, which has led to a decline in farming in the region. Singh emphasized that before considering the establishment of additional mills, the priority must lie in revitalizing sugar cane production and encouraging farmers to return to their fields.
Furthermore, he mentioned that the Chinese consultants have identified potential sites for a new mill that are less vulnerable to flooding, particularly higher ground near the existing Ba mill. A government delegation is set to visit China next week to evaluate the recommendations before any formal actions are taken.
This aligns with ongoing efforts in Fiji’s sugar industry, which has been grappling with declining production and calls for modernization. The situation emphasizes the need for strategic planning and collaboration among stakeholders to breathe new life into this critical sector of the country’s economy.
With these developments, there is room for optimism. By focusing on improved efficiency and modern technology, Fiji’s sugar industry could stabilize and reaffirm its significance, not only in the domestic market but also across the Pacific islands. The ongoing exploration of contemporary practices and facilities highlights the commitment to enhancing productivity and sustaining livelihoods within the farming community.
