The Fiji Sugar Corporation has been instructed to promptly restore the railway line from Lausa Loop to Tawatawa Point to alleviate transportation issues faced by sugarcane farmers. Minister for Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, issued this directive after community consultations revealed concerns from over 40 farmers in Drumasi, Yaladro, and Tagitagi regarding the closure of the rail line, which has hindered their ability to transport cane to the Rarawai Mill effectively.
Following the farmers’ grievances, an urgent meeting took place involving Permanent Secretary Dr. Vinesh Kumar and CEOs from both the Fiji Sugar Corporation and the Sugar Cane Growers Council, alongside Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad. The Minister acted decisively to ensure that no additional costs or delays would fall upon the farmers. He stated, “I have given instruction to start immediately to repair the tramline, and I am told that in the next three weeks it will all be in order,” emphasizing the urgency as the harvesting season is already underway.
This commitment signifies the Ministry’s dedication to supporting cane farmers, as reactivating rail services in Tavua is expected to enhance efficient and cost-effective cane delivery to the Rarawai Mill, positively impacting the long-term sustainability of the sugar industry in that region. During the tramline restoration, farmers are encouraged to utilize truck transport where feasible to ensure minimal disruption to harvesting operations.
Previous reports indicate ongoing upgrades to transportation infrastructure are vital for the sugar sector’s revival, as such improvements have been acknowledged repeatedly in discussions led by Minister Singh. Such proactive measures are essential for boosting the resilience and productivity of Fiji’s sugar industry, reflecting hope for the future as farmers work closely with government initiatives to solve ongoing logistical challenges.
