The Minister for Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, has announced two vital financial support packages designed to assist sugarcane farmers in Fiji. Acknowledging the dedication of these farmers, the government will distribute a bonus of $5 per tonne to those who increase their cane production in the 2024 season compared to the previous year. This initiative is expected to benefit 3,208 farmers, who will collectively receive approximately $596,701.05 for an additional harvest of 119,340.21 tonnes.

In addition, the government has extended the Manual Harvesting Program, which will see 7,786 farmers receiving $3 per tonne for manually harvested cane, totaling around $2,171,633.34. This support is crucial for alleviating the financial challenges associated with labor-intensive harvesting methods.

Minister Singh emphasized that these financial initiatives represent the government’s commitment to supporting farmers, who are considered the backbone of Fiji’s sugar industry. He expressed optimism for the industry’s future, setting a goal of 1.8 million tonnes in total cane production for 2024 and an ambitious target of reaching 3.5 million tonnes within the next five years.

This newest initiative builds on earlier efforts to increase payments to farmers, which have significantly improved income levels within the sector. The government’s proactive measures are aimed not only at providing immediate financial relief but also at promoting sustainability and productivity in the sugarcane community, fostering hopes for a resilient agricultural future in Fiji.

These actions reflect a strategic approach by the government to secure the livelihoods of farmers, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Fiji’s sugar industry, and highlighting the importance of adaptability in agricultural practices. The emphasis on increased production and the financial support shows a commitment to a thriving agricultural sector, which is essential for the country’s economy.
