Fiji’s Sugar Drivers Under Fire: Kava Allegations Surface

The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) locomotive drivers are facing scrutiny due to allegations of misconduct. There are claims that some drivers have been consuming kava during their working hours, a concern raised by farmers from the Wainikoro Sector in Labasa to the Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh.

Minister Singh stated that such behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated within the FSC. He emphasized that his ministry, along with the FSC, is committed to addressing these issues. Farmers have reported that the alleged kava consumption may have caused delays in train trips for transporting sugarcane to Wainikoro.

Additionally, an investigation is underway regarding a recent fatal accident that occurred in Lausa, Tavua. Minister Singh is awaiting feedback from the FSC concerning this incident.

To enhance monitoring of locomotive drivers, he has requested the installation of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in locomotives. This measure is intended to keep track of both the drivers and the trains’ locations at all times, ensuring timely deliveries to the interior farms for optimal sugarcane production.
