The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) locomotive drivers are under scrutiny due to allegations of misconduct. Reports suggest that some drivers are consuming kava during their working hours. This issue was recently highlighted by farmers from the Wainikoro Sector in Labasa.
Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh, stated that such behavior will not be tolerated and emphasized that both his ministry and the FSC aim to prevent misuse of office. Farmers have indicated that kava consumption may have led to delays in train trips to Wainikoro, impacting the transport of sugarcane.
Mr. Singh is also looking into a fatal accident that occurred in Lausa, Tavua, and is awaiting a report from the FSC regarding this incident. To enhance oversight of locomotive operations, he has requested that the FSC implement Global Positioning System (GPS) technology in locomotives. This would allow for real-time monitoring of both drivers and locomotives, ensuring timely transportation of sugarcane to the mill for production.
