The sugarcane crushing season is facing significant challenges due to a wave of crop damage caused by off-season fires, which have affected approximately 170 acres of sugarcane farms, translating to a loss of about 4,950 tonnes of cane. Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh reported that the damage this year is more extensive than in prior seasons, with arson and accidental burnings both contributing to the destruction.

While there are currently no dedicated funds to compensate the affected farmers directly, the government has established a rehabilitation package offering $650 per acre for those impacted. Minister Singh noted that ongoing assessments are in progress, and payments will be allocated shortly. He emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling the issue of off-season burning, stating that all incidents will be investigated and those responsible will face legal repercussions.

The damage resulting from these fires highlights a pressing concern for the agricultural sector. The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) had previously expressed alarm over the detrimental effects of such practices, which not only harm individual growers but also threaten the sustainability of the entire sugarcane industry.

In previous discussions, stakeholders have recognized the financial strain on farmers, particularly as burning can affect sugar quality and processing timelines. For context, the losses stemming from illegal cane burning can average between $3 to $5 per tonne, leading to significant economic implications for the industry.

This situation is a vital call to action for community unity and vigilance against these criminal acts. The collective effort of all stakeholders is essential to safeguard the future of sugarcane farming, ensuring that farmers can continue to thrive and contribute positively to the economy. Despite the challenges posed by this season’s fires, there remains a hopeful outlook that community engagement and financial support will lead to a more sustainable future for Fiji’s sugar industry.
