Sugar cane growers in Fiji are set to receive a significant financial boost with a special payment of $5 per tonne of cane, in addition to the fourth cane payment of $17.03 per tonne for their harvest last year. This was announced by the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC), with payments expected to be distributed later this week.
FSC board chairman Nitya Reddy expressed the corporation’s commitment to supporting farmers, stating that these additional payments reflect their dedication to ensuring growers receive fair returns. Reddy noted, “We know what farmers are up against, and we’re doing everything within our reach to ensure that they get a fair return.” This sentiment echoes the ongoing efforts of the Fiji Sugar Corporation to not only meet but exceed guaranteed prices, which are now set at a total of $86.66 per tonne for the 2024 season, surpassing the government’s guaranteed price of $85 per tonne.
As of April 30, 2025, the collective earnings for sugarcane growers totaled $115,427,843, and payments have been structured to provide timely support to farmers as they prepare for the upcoming 2025 season. The additional $5 payment will be provided without deductions, further easing financial pressures on growers.
Coinciding with this announcement, the FSC confirmed the commencement dates for the upcoming crushing season, which will start on June 11 in Lautoka, June 17 in Labasa, and June 24 in Rarawai, Ba. This proactive planning aims to assist farmers in preparing adequately for the season ahead.
The collective effort in policymaking and support for sugarcane farmers embodies a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s sugar industry, promoting resilience amid ongoing economic challenges. With both government and FSC backing, there is optimism that farmers can continue to invest in their operations, fostering a more stable future for this vital agricultural sector.
