The Catholic Church in Fiji has raised concerns over the increasing number of street dwellers in Suva, particularly noting that many of them are iTaukei. As part of its commitment to assist those in need, the church regularly distributes food packs to the homeless.

Ben Salacakau, a representative of the Catholic Church in Fiji, highlighted the health issues arising from the rapid rise in street dwellers, citing the need for a strategic approach to address the problem. He emphasized that the growing number of iTaukei individuals living on the streets requires a united response from families and communities.

He stated, “This is a significant issue not only for us but also for the families of those affected and how they are responding.” The prevalence of homelessness in Suva is a critical concern for local communities, with churches and various organizations feeling a sense of responsibility to provide assistance.

Mr. Salacakau pointed out that churches offer immediate support such as food and shelter, as well as long-term assistance through counseling and job training programs. He mentioned existing initiatives like a food and nutrition program and regular soup kitchens aimed at ensuring street dwellers have access to nutritious food.

He also stressed the importance of offering counseling services to address mental health and substance abuse issues that could contribute to homelessness. Additionally, he noted that street dwellers often face risks of violence and exploitation, emphasizing the need for safety and security in the support provided to them.

Challenges such as insufficient infrastructure to support shelters and services for the homeless were also highlighted. Street dwellers frequently encounter social stigma and discrimination, which can hinder their access to services and reintegration into society. Mr. Salacakau remarked that this stigma might deter the wider community from supporting initiatives aimed at helping the homeless.

He called for increased advocacy and awareness regarding the struggles faced by street dwellers, advocating for improved policies and support systems at both local and national levels.
