Fiji’s Struggle for Truth: Can Convenience Be Overcome?

Fiji is currently experiencing a situation described as a “culture of convenience,” according to Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu. He noted that this trend encourages individuals or groups to take shortcuts for personal or political gain. Seruiratu’s comments were in response to the findings of the government’s National Security and Defence Review (NSDR), which pointed out a significant lack of trust in the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

Seruiratu emphasized that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) represents a crucial opportunity for the RFMF to disclose the events leading to previous coups in the country. He stressed the importance of allowing those involved in past political upheavals to share their narratives, which should include recently released individuals connected to the events of 2000, as well as military members who faced incarceration.

He highlighted the necessity of including accounts from those involved in the 1987 events, asserting that only through understanding and transparency can the nation move forward. As a former RFMF officer, Seruiratu warned against ignoring the truth, comparing it to neglecting a spider while only dealing with the web it has woven.

On the subject of the 2013 Constitution, Seruiratu insisted that discussions regarding its review should only take place after the completion of a comprehensive and sincere TRC process. He argued that Fiji’s challenges stem not from the Constitution itself but from the ambitions of certain individuals or groups dissatisfied with the democratic system, prompting them to pursue coups.

He further noted that historical coups in 1987, 2000, and 2006 led to constitutional changes that included provisions shielding their instigators from legal repercussions. Seruiratu called for a genuine commitment from community leaders, including political and religious figures, business representatives, and the general populace, to place the interests of the community at the forefront of these discussions.
