The Catholic Church in Fiji has expressed concern over the increasing number of street dwellers in Suva, most of whom are identified as iTaukei. A representative of the church, Ben Salacakau, highlighted the significant health issues arising from this rise, calling for a comprehensive plan to tackle the challenge.

Salacakau emphasized the need for a collective approach involving families and communities, noting that the growing number of affected iTaukei individuals presents a serious problem for both the church and their families. He pointed out that the situation of street dwellers in Suva is a major worry for local communities, including religious organizations.

Churches feel a profound responsibility to assist those in need, offering immediate aid such as food and shelter, and longer-term support like counseling and job training. Salacakau mentioned that the church runs a food and nutrition program and regularly distributes meals to ensure that vulnerable individuals have access to nourishing food.

There is also a pressing need for counseling services to help address mental health problems and substance abuse, which might contribute to homelessness. Street dwellers face various challenges, including vulnerability to violence and exploitation, making it crucial to provide assistance that ensures their safety.

Furthermore, Salacakau pointed out that inadequate infrastructure for shelters and services, along with social stigma and discrimination, hampers efforts to help street dwellers. These factors can inhibit access to services and hinder their reintegration into society.

He stressed the importance of raising awareness about the issues faced by street dwellers and advocated for improved policies and support systems at both local and national levels. Salacakau also noted that a lack of coordination among different organizations, including government bodies, NGOs, and religious groups, results in fragmented services and inefficiencies.
