The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection in Fiji has issued a grave warning regarding the illegal nature of forcing or urging children to beg. They emphasize that such practices not only put children at risk of exploitation and abuse but also rob them of a safe and nurturing environment essential for their development.
Minister Sashi Kiran has reiterated the legal obligation of parents and guardians to prioritize the welfare and safety of children. “Encouraging or forcing children to beg violates their rights and contravenes national laws designed to protect them,” she stated. Consequently, those who facilitate child begging will face legal repercussions.
In a collaborative effort with law enforcement, the ministry is committed to prosecuting those who violate these laws to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children. The public is encouraged to report any instances of child begging by reaching out to the Child Helpline at 1325.
Minister Kiran called on everyone to work together to foster a safer and more compassionate society where all children can enjoy a joyous and secure holiday season. As the new year begins, the ministry is urging stakeholders and communities to join in making Fiji a safer place for families and children, wishing everyone a New Year filled with kindness and goodwill.
This initiative highlights the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding the welfare of children. By drawing attention to these issues, the ministry not only aims to protect children but also nurtures a sense of community support and compassion, which can have a lasting positive impact on society.
