Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has issued a serious alert to parents regarding the prohibition of child begging on the streets, reinforcing the country’s legal stance against this practice.
This warning comes after an investigation concerning Mereseini Biaudamu, who was discovered begging in Nausori while caring for two children. Although Ms. Biaudamu was not the children’s mother, she claimed they had been left in her care by their mother, who allegedly lacked awareness of them begging. The minister pointed out that the children’s parents are already receiving monthly allowances from the ministry, intended to support their welfare.
Ms. Kiran articulated the dangers child begging poses to minors, stating that it significantly increases their risk of exploitation, abuse, and harm while infringing on their right to a safe environment. She emphasized the legal responsibility that guardians have in safeguarding their children’s welfare.
The ministry is particularly urging the public to be vigilant during the upcoming holiday season, encouraging them to report any instances of child begging. To address such violations, the ministry, alongside law enforcement, plans to take firm action against offenders to protect children’s wellbeing.
Kiran called for a collective effort from all sectors of society to ensure a safer environment for families and children, aiming for a joyful and secure holiday season in 2025. Members of the public who wish to report concerns or seek help are encouraged to reach out to the ministry’s child helpline at 1325.
This initiative highlights the ongoing commitment to prioritizing children’s rights and safety, fostering a compassionate and supportive community for all families.
Summary: Minister Sashi Kiran warns against child begging, citing legal obligations for parents and urging public reporting of such activities. The ministry aims to protect children’s welfare and promote a safe environment, especially during the holiday season.
