The Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji has emphasized its dedication to implementing drug testing in its sporting events, as reaffirmed by national president Dhirendra Nand during the Sabha’s recent 63rd national convention held in Lautoka. This commitment comes in response to some minor incidents of physical strain experienced by athletes at the Sabha’s annual sports event, which Nand attributed to insufficient preparation.

Nand expressed the Sabha’s determination to maintain a drug-free environment, declaring that all Sanatan sports would remain clean. “We want to stop drugs from infiltrating our society,” he stated, highlighting the positive reception from many teams regarding this initiative, despite some dissatisfaction expressed by others.

Initial assessments during the convention reported a few positive drug tests, which will be addressed in accordance with Fiji Football regulations, involving collaboration with relevant authorities while ensuring due process. “It has to go through the labs and there will be other processes to follow,” he clarified.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts across Fiji to combat drug use in sports, as previous reports have underscored the significance of establishing local drug testing facilities to enhance the integrity of athletic competitions. The increasing occurrence of positive tests in sports, particularly highlighted during major tournaments like the FMF Inter District Championship, reflects a growing awareness of substance abuse issues.

By reinforcing these measures, the Sabha aims not only to promote fair play and athlete well-being but also to contribute positively to the community’s values around sportsmanship and integrity. This approach reflects a hopeful trajectory for sporting events in Fiji, fostering an environment committed to health, responsibility, and shared moral standards for future generations of athletes.
