Leaders within Fiji’s sports administration stress that transparency and good governance are paramount as investigations into the operations of the Fiji Sports Council commence. Chairman Peter Mazey stated that the investigation team will concentrate on governance, procedures, and transparency, rather than a financial audit.

Mazey emphasized that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s strong message regarding the importance of accountability throughout all levels of sports administration. “This is not an audit of the financials of the Sports Council. It’s an audit of the governance and of the processes and procedures relating to transparency,” he remarked.

The review is expected to be a thorough one, with most investigators coming from Australia to ensure independence. Findings from this investigation will be submitted to Prime Minister Rabuka, who is overseeing the sports portfolio during this period.

In a significant development, Fiji Sports Council Chief Executive Gilbert Vakalalabure has been instructed to go on leave while the investigation takes place. Mazey noted that should any issues of a legal nature arise during the investigation, they will be referred to the police for additional scrutiny.

Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Aliki Bia expressed the ministry’s respect for the Prime Minister’s decision and reiterated their commitment to supporting the government’s initiatives in the sports sector. Bia added, “We do respect the decision that has been made by the Honourable Prime Minister,” indicating readiness to assist the coalition government and engage in the daily operations of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The focus now shifts to ensuring that the ministry continues its essential work while contributing to the process of enhancing governance within Fiji’s sporting frameworks. This initiative signifies a step towards fostering an environment of accountability and integrity in sports administration in Fiji.
