The chairman of the Fiji Sports Council (FSC), Gilbert Vakalalabure, has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for addressing the concerning condition of the HFC Bank Stadium. Vakalalabure revealed that the FSC is grappling with a substantial $9 million debt inherited from the prior administration, which has significantly impacted their operations. He indicated that since assuming office in 2023, he discovered that the FSC had not submitted audited accounts since 2019, which has been a barrier to securing government grants.

“I understand that it is not my fault, but I will take responsibility for the unaudited accounts since 2019 as I am now the leader,” Vakalalabure stated. The Council is currently paying $34,000 every week in debt to HFC Bank, along with an additional $15,000 weekly for stadium operations, which includes maintenance and upkeep. He emphasized that while they do receive some revenue from sponsorships and advertisements, there has been no government grant provided for the past three years, primarily due to the lack of audited accounts.

Vakalalabure expressed appreciation for the Prime Minister’s concern as it opens avenues to engage with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and HFC Bank regarding stadium improvements. He expressed hope that addressing these financial matters can help keep the stadium prepared for upcoming events, including a match against Tonga. This proactive approach may foster collaboration with relevant stakeholders to secure the necessary funding and expertise for enhancements.

Previous discussions highlighted similar issues with the management and infrastructure at HFC Bank Stadium, emphasizing the need for effective governance to ensure facilities meet international standards. The FSC has been allocated $670,000 in the upcoming 2025-2026 National Budget, which could serve as a starting point for addressing maintenance and infrastructure improvements.

The challenges faced by the FSC present an opportunity for reform and revitalization in Fiji’s sports culture. By prioritizing these infrastructural developments, there is hope that Fiji can elevate its status as a host of international events and enhance the experience for athletes and fans alike, promoting greater community engagement in sports.

This situation is a reminder of the importance of collaboration among governmental bodies and sports organizations, which is essential for fostering a vibrant sporting environment that celebrates the achievements of athletes and inspires future generations.
