The 2024 Fiji Spartan APAC Championship and Trifecta wrapped up yesterday, featuring exhilarating 10km super and 5km sprint obstacle races at Aviva Farms in Sabeto. The event attracted hundreds of participants against the picturesque backdrop of the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, renowned for its majestic peaks and lush greenery.
Competitors ranged from experienced Spartan athletes from across the globe to enthusiastic first-timers and local teams, all eager to test their limits. David Dewar, who finished the Spartan Super 10km, praised the event, stating, “It was an excellent event. The 10km was pretty gruelling, but it was great to have the support of so many people along the course. Well done to the organizers, Tourism Fiji, and sponsors for putting on an epic event in such a stunning location.”
First-time racer Susannah Hodson also shared her experience after completing the 5km sprint with friends: “This was my first Spartan race and it was a great chance to get the whole family involved. The kids loved the kid’s race, and I found the 5km tough, but it’s a great sense of achievement at the end.”
On a different note, Fijian boxing champion Winston Hill faced a personal setback leading into the event. Still recovering from a swollen hand injury sustained during a boxing match in Nadi three weeks prior, Hill said, “I had broken my hand in the last fight, so this set me back from competing in the races I wanted to do. I still competed in the open division in the 10km and 5km despite some obstacles I couldn’t manage.”
Tourism Fiji CEO Brent Hill expressed excitement about the event, highlighting the international participation it attracted. “The race kicked off with the 10k night race, and we are super excited for what’s ahead this weekend. Last year, the event contributed over FJD$7.8 million to Fiji’s economy, and we’re confident that this year will see equal or more impact, all while promoting physical fitness and fun for participants of all ages.”
This annual championship not only invigorates the local economy but also unites athletes and families from diverse backgrounds in a celebration of fitness and the natural beauty of Fiji.
As we look ahead, it’s inspiring to see the community come together for such events, reinforcing the message that physical challenges can be overcome, and every participant’s journey contributes to a larger narrative of resilience and celebration in the picturesque setting of Fiji.
