The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is collaborating with the Australian government’s Market Development Facility (MDF) to address regulatory barriers hindering the solar energy sector in Fiji. This partnership aims to streamline licensing and installation processes, making it easier for households and businesses to adopt solar energy systems.

FCCC Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating that it will foster a more favorable regulatory environment that attracts investment in renewable energy and supports the country’s transition to solar solutions. The focus will be on developing a digitized payment system and optimizing the approval process to ensure efficient data extraction for reporting.

This initiative aligns with Fiji’s climate change objectives, as the government aims to reduce carbon emissions by 30% through its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) efforts. The FCCC’s authority over energy sector licensing, established under the Electricity Act of 2017, enables it to facilitate this transition towards renewable energy.

A recent survey conducted by MDF and Solar Hub Fiji revealed a significant interest in solar energy among urban households. It found that nearly 70% of respondents were willing to invest using their own funds, while 50% showed interest in financing options such as loans or subscription models. However, the survey also identified the need for improved regulatory frameworks to promote greater adoption of solar energy in both residential and commercial sectors.

Kelera Cavuilati, MDF Fiji Country Director, expressed pride in supporting the FCCC and shared a commitment to advancing Fiji’s renewable energy agenda. The collaboration not only aims to address regulatory challenges but also to enhance consumer awareness of solar energy benefits, highlighting the importance of a streamlined process for both approval and complaint management.

This positive momentum in Fiji’s renewable energy landscape suggests a hopeful outlook for advancing solar energy solutions, which could lead to enhanced sustainability and economic growth for the nation. By creating supportive regulatory conditions and improving financing options, both the FCCC and MDF are paving the way for a greener future in Fiji.
