Fiji’s Social Crisis: Are We Missing the Message?

The Fiji Council of Churches is urging a more serious commitment from community leaders, religious institutions, and the government to address the escalating social issues in Fiji.

General Secretary Reverend Simione Tugi expressed concern that the current strategies are ineffective, as evidenced by the rising crime rates, increasing violence against women and children, and the prevalence of drug abuse in the country.

Tugi shared his thoughts on social media, emphasizing that if existing measures were successful, there would be a noticeable decrease in these social problems. He highlighted that the message being conveyed is not resonating, as these concerns are pervasive even in rural villages.

He stated, “When discussing the need for collaboration between the community, the church, and the government, it’s clear that something is fundamentally wrong, and we must reconsider our priorities.” He warned that if these issues continue to escalate, they may reach a point of no return.

Tugi also pointed out that many churches are experiencing dwindling attendance, as people feel their personal struggles are not adequately addressed. He questioned the reasons behind empty churches, suggesting it stems from a failure to deliver a meaningful message, leading individuals to seek solace outside the church.
