The Fiji Development Bank (FDB) is inviting entrepreneurs across the nation to apply for the 2024 National Small Medium Enterprise (SME) Awards, encouraging local businesses to showcase their achievements in the face of evolving economic landscapes. The awards, launched in Suva by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and MSMEs Manoa Kamikamica, center around the theme “Sustainable Transformation and Progressive Growth.”

During the event, FDB board chair Damend Gounder emphasized the critical role of SMEs in fostering economic stability and growth within Fiji, stating, “Today, we recognize the unwavering commitment of small and medium enterprises to Fiji’s economic future.” The awards celebrate the daily efforts of entrepreneurs who not only build businesses but also contribute significantly to their communities.

The awards will highlight various categories, including Best Agribusiness SME of the Year, Sustainable SME of the Year, and multiple empowerment awards acknowledging youth and women entrepreneurs. The overall SME of the Year will also be awarded at the ceremony, representing the pinnacle of success for a single business.

Mr. Kamikamica noted that last year’s awards highlighted an impressive array of talent and creativity within the SME sector. “To all SMEs, this is your moment. Your hard work is important. Your determination strengthens our economy,” he stated, urging participants to share their entrepreneurial stories and take advantage of the exposure and opportunities these awards present.

The deadline for applications is set for May 2, 2025, and criteria for entry include businesses having a turnover or total asset between $50,000 and $1,250,000 and being 100% owned by Fijian citizens. Notably, past winners are welcome to re-enter, reflecting the ongoing growth and adaptability within Fiji’s business community.

This initiative not only recognizes the hard work of local entrepreneurs but also encourages a culture of innovation and sustainability, marking a hopeful future for Fiji’s economic landscape. As SMEs receive the support they need, they can continue to thrive, ultimately leading to community development and national prosperity.
