Small businesses play a crucial role in Fiji’s economy, contributing 18% to the country’s GDP and employing a substantial 60% of the workforce. Acknowledging their vital significance, the Fijian government has renewed its commitment to supporting National Small and Medium Enterprises (NSMEs) as essential contributors to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In a recent move to empower local entrepreneurs, four business owners from Lamini Village in Taveuni have received a valuable boost. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, awarded them a ‘Grant Agreement’ as part of the Ministry’s Trade Enhancement Programme.
This grant is intended to support and expand their roadside businesses, reflecting the government’s dedication to strengthening small enterprises and promoting economic growth in rural communities.
This initiative not only provides financial support to individual entrepreneurs but also highlights the government’s focus on stimulating local economies, which is especially important in fostering resilience in rural areas.
