Small businesses play a crucial role in Fiji’s economy, accounting for 18% of the nation’s GDP and providing employment for 60% of the workforce. Acknowledging their significance, the Fijian government has reiterated its support for National Small and Medium Enterprises (NSMEs), recognizing them as essential contributors to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Recently, in an effort to empower local entrepreneurs, four business owners from Lamini Village in Taveuni were awarded a notable grant. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, presented them with a ‘Grant Agreement’ as part of the Ministry’s Trade Enhancement Programme.
This grant is designed to assist in the growth and expansion of their roadside businesses, showcasing the government’s continuous dedication to bolstering small enterprises and promoting economic development in rural areas.
This initiative not only signifies financial support but also highlights the government’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurial spirit in the community. By empowering local businesses, there is a hopeful outlook for economic resilience and growth across Fiji, especially in rural regions where such initiatives can make a significant impact.
