Fiji’s Silver Triumph: Coach Kolinisau Reflects on Olympic Journey

Fiji Men’s 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau conveyed his pride in the team’s performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, despite finishing as runners-up and earning a silver medal.

Upon their return to Nadi yesterday morning, both the men’s and women’s teams received a warm welcome at the Tanoa International Hotel, marked by a traditional and spirited ceremony.

Kolinisau reflected on the team’s journey, acknowledging that everything had gone according to plan until the final match against the host nation, France, where they suffered a close defeat.

“Great to be back in the country and reuniting with our loved ones, it’s wonderful to see everyone,” Kolinisau stated.

He added, “Everything went well at the Olympics until the last game against France, where we lost and ended up with a different color medal, but the boys performed admirably.”

Kolinisau praised the team’s efforts and highlighted the importance of securing a silver medal at such a prestigious event.

“I gathered the boys and told them that winning a silver medal at the Olympics, which happens every four years, is something to be proud of.”

The coach expressed his wish to continue leading the team but recognized that the final decision lies with the Fiji Rugby Union and its board.

“I need to sit down with the Fiji Rugby Union and the board since my contract runs until the Olympics.”

He noted, “Let’s see what they want; I would love to stay, but it’s up to them. I’m proud of the boys, and the new players contributed significantly, showing promise.”

“If the FRU provides me with the opportunity to coach for the next Olympics, it would be a fantastic chance to develop my players over the next four years.”

Kolinisau acknowledged the support of the public and families, emphasizing the crucial role fans played in the team’s achievements.

He expressed gratitude for their steadfast support, crediting them as an integral part of the team’s journey.
