Fiji’s Silver Triumph: A Legacy Begins

Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai remarked that the performance level achieved by both Fiji’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics is likely to inspire future generations and young athletes aspiring to represent Fiji. This statement came during a welcoming ceremony held on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, with family and friends present.

Tuwai acknowledged the disappointment of not meeting the nation’s expectations regarding medal outcomes but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to rebound. He expressed gratitude to God for protection and guidance during their preparations and return from Paris. He also thanked coaches, management, and family members for their support as they represented Fiji at the Olympics.

He addressed the nation, apologizing for not bringing back the desired medal, saying, “I know that there were expectations of us, but we just fell short at the last minute.” Tuwai highlighted the challenges of being away from loved ones for a month.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances, commending the coaches and management for their unwavering support throughout the tournament. He acknowledged the invaluable leadership from coaches, particularly praising Mr. Osea Kolonisau and his family for their dedication.

Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, celebrated both teams’ accomplishments, stating they have brought immense pride to the nation. He emphasized the spirit and resilience showcased by the players, highlighting their inspiring representation of Fiji on the world stage.

Mazey noted the team’s historic achievement of winning a silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, expressing admiration for their hard work and dedication. He stressed that the silver medal represents countless hours of practice and sacrifice, reminding all that this accomplishment is significant even without gold.

Looking ahead, Mazey encouraged continued support for the teams, suggesting the silver medal could serve as a stepping stone for future success.
