Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai highlighted that the performances at the 2024 Paris Olympics could serve as motivation for the nation and the youth aspiring to represent it. His remarks came during a welcoming ceremony organized by the Fiji Rugby Union on August 4, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, where families and loved ones gathered to celebrate the teams.

While acknowledging that the outcome was not what many in Fiji had hoped for, Tuwai expressed confidence in the team’s ability to rebound. He began by thanking God for guidance during their preparation and safe return from Paris, as well as expressing gratitude to the coaches, management, and supporters.

Tuwai apologized for not securing the expected medal, stating that the team fell short of expectations at a critical moment. He emphasized the difficulty of being away from families for a month and noted the personal sacrifices made by the players.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru commended both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their efforts, praising the coaches and management for their support. He highlighted the leadership and commitment within the teams, particularly acknowledging Osea Kolonisau and his family for their dedication.

Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board interim chairman Peter Mazey stated that the gathering was meant to celebrate the accomplishments of both teams, which brought immense pride to the nation. He emphasized the resilience, skill, and determination displayed by the Fiji 7s team throughout the tournament, noting that their performance inspired future generations of athletes.

Mazey expressed gratitude to the coaching and medical staff, recognizing their vital role in the team’s success. He articulated pride in the team’s silver medal achievement at the 2024 Olympics, framing it not just as an accolade but as a culmination of hard work and sacrifices.

He further encouraged continuous support for the national teams, viewing the silver medal as a stepping stone for future success. Mazey concluded by urging the players to take a break, spend time with their families, and prepare for upcoming challenges.
