Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the performance standards set by the Fiji teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could serve as inspiration for future athletes wanting to represent the nation. This statement was made during a welcoming ceremony for the men’s and women’s teams held on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and friends.
Tuwai acknowledged that while the results may not have met the hopes of many, the team possesses the resilience to bounce back. He began by thanking God for the protection and guidance during the preparation leading up to Paris and for their safe return. He also expressed gratitude to coaches, management, and family members for their unwavering support during this significant event.
He extended an apology to the nation for not bringing back the medal of their aspirations, noting the heavy expectations placed upon them but affirmed that they fell just short at the final moment. Tuwai reflected on the challenge of being away from loved ones for a month.
Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru commended both Fiji’s 7s teams for their efforts and gratitude towards the coaches and management for their continuous support. He specifically acknowledged the leadership of Mr. Osea Kolonisau and his family for their dedication.
Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board interim chairman Peter Mazey highlighted the event as a celebration of the extraordinary achievements of both teams, which have brought immense pride to Fiji. He praised the teams for their heart and determination, which showcased the essence of Fijian rugby against tough adversaries, inspiring a new generation of athletes to aim for similar accomplishments.
Mazey expressed his pride in the teams, emphasizing that while they did not secure gold, winning a silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris is a remarkable achievement deserving of recognition. He thanked the coaching, medical, and support staff for their commitment and stated that the journey had required collective efforts.
He concluded with a reminder that despite the disappointment of not clinching gold, the silver medal represents the hard work and sacrifices made. Looking forward, he encouraged continuous support for the teams to build on this success and maintain Fiji’s status as a rugby powerhouse that inspires not only the nation but also the world. He advised the players to take time off to recharge with their families before facing future challenges.
