Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai stated that the performance displayed by both teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire the nation and motivate youth aspiring to represent Fiji. This remark was made at a welcoming ceremony for the men’s and women’s teams on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and friends.

Tuwai acknowledged that while the outcome did not meet the expectations of many, he believes the team possesses the resilience to rise again. He expressed gratitude to God for guidance during their preparations for the Paris campaign and for their safe return. He extended thanks to coaches, management, teammates, and families for their unwavering support in the pursuit of Olympic glory.

In an apology for not bringing home the expected color of the medal, Tuwai recognized the high expectations of the nation but mentioned that they fell short in the final moments. He reflected on the challenges of being away from loved ones for a month.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their efforts, acknowledging the coaches and support staff for their vital roles during the tournament. He particularly noted Mr. Osea Kolonisau and his family’s ongoing dedication to the teams.

Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board interim chairman Peter Mazey highlighted the purpose of the gathering as a celebration of the remarkable accomplishments of both teams, emphasizing the pride they brought to Fiji. He commended the teams for their determination and skill on the global stage. Mazey remarked that they not only represented a nation but also inspired future generations to dream of wearing the iconic jersey.

He recognized the team’s hard work and the spirit of Fiji embodied in their achievements, declaring their silver medal at the 2024 Olympics a historic moment. Mazey expressed appreciation to the coaching staff and medical teams for their steadfast support in guiding the players toward success.

He noted that the silver medal symbolizes not just an accolade, but also the dedication and sacrifices made in their journey. He encouraged continued support for the teams and framed the silver medal as a stepping stone for even greater accomplishments in the future.

As the team returns home, he urged them to take a moment to rest with their families and prepare for the challenges ahead, expressing gratitude for their representation at the Olympics and wishing them well in future endeavors.
