Fiji’s Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, has raised alarm over the escalating drug issue in the country, particularly in relation to the involvement of children. During his address at the Rotary Club Labasa’s Gala Night on Saturday, Mr. Tikoduadua revealed his shock at reports indicating that parents are exploiting their children to distribute drugs within local communities and schools in Labasa.
He acknowledged the widespread use of various drugs, particularly “green” and “white” substances, across Fiji but noted that he had not anticipated children being used as dealers outside the major urban centers like Suva. This disturbing trend signifies a concerning shift, revealing that drug challenges have now infiltrated smaller communities.
Mr. Tikoduadua emphasized the importance of community involvement in addressing the drug epidemic, highlighting that responsibility should extend beyond the government. “We must understand that the community is foundational in addressing these issues, as they are the ones who nurture and support the children,” he stated. He urged families and community members—parents, grandparents, and relatives—to take the lead in safeguarding the youth from such harmful influences, while acknowledging the government’s ongoing efforts to provide support.
In a hopeful perspective, this call to action invites communities to unite and address these critical challenges collaboratively. By fostering stronger community ties and promoting awareness, there is potential for positive change. Local efforts to combat drug abuse may inspire lasting solutions for a drug-free future for Fiji’s youth.
