Fiji is set to breathe new life into its shipbuilding industry, which is expected to yield substantial benefits for the nation’s economy, according to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. He highlighted that this initiative will not only create job opportunities but also nurture a skilled workforce essential for sustainable development.
The revitalization plans for the shipbuilding sector were reinforced by a recent feasibility study report received from the Australian High Commission. This collaborative effort aims to make Fiji’s shipbuilding industry globally competitive, enhancing national security and disaster response capabilities through the production and maintenance of critical maritime assets.
Rabuka stated, “Through the enabling production and maintenance of critical maritime assets, we will also enhance our national security and disaster response capabilities,” emphasizing the importance of this sector for the welfare of citizens. Concurrently, he underscored the government’s commitment to promoting gender equality by prioritizing equal opportunities for women within the traditionally male-dominated field of shipbuilding.
A newly constructed facility in Lautoka will be under the management of Oceania Shipbuilding and Engineering Pte Limited, a government entity formed to oversee operations and ensure the project’s success. This facility not only aims to fulfill current demands for ship repairs and maintenance but also sets the stage for future industry growth, supported by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.
This initiative builds on previous reports and discussions that have recognized Fiji’s potential in the maritime sector. As Fiji seeks to reclaim its historical prowess in shipbuilding, there is a renewed optimism surrounding the partnerships formed with Australia, which are anticipated to result in considerable job creation and economic growth in the region.
