The Fijian Government has taken a significant step towards revitalizing its shipbuilding industry with the submission of a feasibility study report received by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka last Saturday in Lautoka. Compiled by Arup Australia in collaboration with the Australian High Commission and the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP), this report aims to re-establish Fiji’s position within the global maritime sector.
During his address, Prime Minister Rabuka expressed the government’s commitment to developing a world-class shipbuilding facility, which is envisioned to position Fiji as a central hub for maritime engineering, ship construction, and repair services across the Pacific region. The initiative will unfold in phases, starting with the initial site development, followed by prospective expansions into adjacent areas, particularly the Public Works Department site.
Management of the newly established facility will fall under Oceania Shipbuilding and Engineering Pte Limited, a government entity designated to oversee operations and ensure the project’s success. With the Australian government pledging up to $1.7 million for the study and site preparation, this partnership underscores the strategic collaboration between Fiji and Australia to bolster maritime capacities.
The feasibility study encompasses many collaborative elements, involving private sector stakeholders, Fijian universities, training organizations, and international industry experts. The report not only outlines a market assessment and regional needs but highlights significant job creation potential; estimates suggest an on-site workforce of 100 to 120 individuals at peak operational times. To complement this, discussions with the Ministry of Education are ongoing to facilitate vocational training and ensure a skilled workforce is in place.
Australian High Commissioner Ewen McDonald emphasized this initiative as a transformative project that goes beyond infrastructure, aiming to enhance skills development and economic opportunities in Fiji’s maritime industry. This effort also aligns with previous commitments made under a Memorandum of Understanding on Port Infrastructure and Services, signed last year.
