The Fiji Airways men’s sevens team is eagerly preparing for the HSBC SVNS World Series, set to begin later this month. In a strategic move to enhance their readiness, the team will also compete in the Fiji Bitter Mataso 7s tournament. Notably, two Fiji 7s teams will participate, alongside a team from the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua.
Player Suliano Volivoli emphasized the importance of the Mataso competition in sharpening their skills. He stated that this event will serve as significant preparation as they gear up for the Dubai 7s. “We are looking towards preparing ourselves well for our game time there so that we are ready when we depart for the Dubai 7s,” Volivoli noted.
As the rugby community looks forward to the sevens tournament in Lautoka, enthusiastic fans are expected to attend the Mataso tournament to observe the teams in action ahead of the Dubai event. Head coach Osea Kolinisau revealed that the team selection was anticipated to be finalized early this month. Kolinisau acknowledged the challenge of making selections, especially as the national team trained alongside the Fijiana at Bidesi Park, but he remained optimistic about their prospects for the upcoming World Series.
The Mataso 7s tournament will take place from November 15-16 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, promising an exciting showcase of rugby talent.
This event not only serves as a preparatory ground for the teams but also fosters community support and excitement around the sport in Fiji. The upcoming tournament and the World Series ahead embody the hope and resilience of Fijian rugby, showcasing the nation’s unwavering passion for the game.
