The Fiji Airways men’s sevens team is gearing up for the upcoming HSBC SVNS World Series, which kicks off later this month. To boost their preparations, they will be participating in the Fiji Bitter Mataso 7s tournament. This year’s event will feature not just one, but two teams from Fiji 7s, along with a squad from the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua.

Suliano Volivoli expressed that their involvement in the Mataso competition is a strategic move to enhance their performance as they gear up for the Dubai 7s. “We are looking towards preparing ourselves well for our game time there so that we are ready when we depart for the Dubai 7s,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of this opportunity to fine-tune their skills.

As the team prepares in Lautoka, rugby fans are expected to attend the Mataso tournament, eager to catch a glimpse of the national team’s form before the Dubai event. Head coach Osea Kolinisau mentioned that the final team selection was anticipated to occur earlier this month, reflecting the hard work and competition among players.

Training sessions have seen the men’s and women’s teams, including the Fijiana, practicing together at Bidesi Park, highlighting the depth of talent within Fijian rugby. Kolinisau acknowledged that selecting the final squad would be challenging but remains optimistic about the team’s prospects for the 2024/2025 World Series.

The Mataso 7s tournament is set to take place on November 15-16 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, promising an exciting display of rugby ahead of the international season.

This positive build-up showcases not only the team’s commitment to excellence but also the vibrant culture of Fijian rugby, where local tournaments play a significant role in shaping national squads.
