Fiji has long aspired to host a leg of the prestigious HSBC World Sevens Series, and USA 7s coach Mike Friday has voiced strong support for this idea. During the 2025 McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens tournament at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, Friday emphasized the importance of global rugby considering Fiji as a potential host.
“I believe it would be fantastic for Fiji to host an event like this, as it aligns with the vision of global rugby,” Friday said. He highlighted Fiji’s rich history and contribution to the game of sevens, noting that the nation deserves the chance to showcase its unique rugby culture on a wider stage.
Friday, who is coaching the Mike Friday Select 7s team at the Coral Coast Sevens, remarked on the strong performance and depth of Fijian rugby players, stating, “Fiji has the richest resource of rugby sevens players in the world.” He believes that hosting such a tournament would not only spread the game further but also create more opportunities for players who dedicate their lives to rugby.
The Coral Coast Sevens itself serves as a stepping stone to this broader ambition. Tournaments like it are integral in raising the profile of Fijian rugby internationally. In previous years, rugby legends like Waisale Serevi have praised the Coral Coast Sevens for its growing reputation as a competitive international event, while also providing local players with necessary exposure.
Jay Whyte, chairman of the tournament organizing committee, reinforced this commitment to elevate the event each year, improving both fan and player experiences. The event is designed to be accessible, allowing free entry for fans to enjoy top-tier rugby without the financial burden associated with larger international series. The tournament’s diverse engagement, including fan zones and high-level international commentary teams, positions it as a significant fixture within the rugby calendar.
The upcoming Coral Coast Sevens from January 16 to 18 is expected to be an exciting display of athletic prowess and a celebration of rugby culture in Fiji. As anticipation grows for the possibility of facing teams like New Zealand, the excitement around Fijian rugby, and the potential for holding a leg of the HSBC series, remains palpable.
This narrative showcases the vibrant rugby culture in Fiji and highlights how events like the Coral Coast Sevens could play a vital role in its evolution, raising hopes for both local players and the larger rugby community.
