Fiji Airways men’s sevens head coach Osea Kolinisau has commended his team for their mental resilience during recent training sessions. As they prepare for the upcoming Perth 7s tournament scheduled for January 24-26, Kolinisau is focusing on enhancing the team’s defensive strategies and maintaining proper spacing, particularly under fatigue.

The squad gathered for their first training session after the holiday break, and Kolinisau expressed his satisfaction with the players’ mental strength—especially during demanding fitness exercises. “I’m looking at the player’s fitness going to Perth as we want to build on where we are at right now in the series,” he stated. The intensity shown by the players during the rigorous training sets has been notable, encouraging Kolinisau to push them further.

In anticipation of the Coral Coast Sevens set for next week, Kolinisau has already named a team while eight players from the squad will join Mike Friday’s Select Sevens team. He will finalize his lineup for the Perth tournament after observing performances during the three-day event at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.

Kolinisau emphasized the importance of improving defense, particularly during the crucial final moments of matches, and stressed the need for better communication and decision-making on the field. He made it clear that competition for positions in the Perth team is open, reinforcing the objective to secure a win.

“Our ultimate goal for Perth is to claim victory, and the players understand that our season goal is to strive for the series title,” Kolinisau remarked. He also expressed gratitude for being recognized by the Coral Coast Sevens organizers, reflecting on his journey and hoping to inspire young Fijian athletes to follow his path.

This commitment to training and improvement not only highlights the team’s dedication but also sets a positive tone for their upcoming tournaments and the future of Fijian rugby. It’s a great reminder that hard work, resilience, and a strong support system can lead to success on the international stage.
