A committee representing senior citizens is preparing to submit a formal request to the government, advocating for a 20 percent discount on essential goods and services as part of the 2026 National Budget. According to businessman and committee member Sandeep Narayan Singh, this proposal will be forwarded through the public budget submission process. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the significant contributions of senior citizens to national development, encouraging Fiji to emulate countries that have adopted similar measures.

Singh highlighted the financial pressures that rising living costs exert on older individuals, indicating that the submission will also include broader support initiatives for the elderly. He noted some critical feedback surrounding the recent Senior Citizens Day event; however, the overwhelming turnout and emotional engagement demonstrated that the issue resonates strongly with the public.

“Our budget submission to the government will advocate for providing senior citizens with a 20% discount on various essential items,” Singh stated. “This is a practice observed in many countries worldwide that acknowledge the efforts and contributions of their elderly populations.”

In support of this initiative, Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa reinforced the Coalition Government’s commitment to senior citizens, describing them as integral to the fabric of Fiji’s communities and institutions. During the celebrations for International Day for Senior Citizens, Nalumisa spoke about ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare access, strengthen social protection measures, and create more opportunities for older individuals to engage actively in community life, including the development of senior-friendly public spaces.

Nalumisa also called on families and younger generations to reinforce intergenerational ties, emphasizing that the wisdom and experience of senior citizens are among Fiji’s most valuable resources. This collective advocacy for seniors not only aims to address immediate financial concerns but also seeks to foster a greater appreciation and support system for the elderly in the community.
