Stable leadership within the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the Fiji Police Force is crucial for the country’s security, according to Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that both leadership positions are secure, which would help alleviate insecurity and uncertainty for the public and organizations like the Fiji Police Force.
Ro Kalouniwai stated that it is essential to have a Commissioner of Police in place, expressing that the qualifications of the individual, whether local or expatriate, are what truly matters. “The new commissioner needs to be capable of performing the job effectively,” he remarked.
Reflecting on previous instances where military personnel led the police force, Ro Kalouniwai acknowledged that while this approach had some merit, it is time for a shift. He believes the position should be filled by someone deserving from within the police organization.
When questioned about the appointment of Sitiveni Qiliho as Police Commissioner, he refrained from labeling it as incorrect. He suggested that it is important to consider the circumstances surrounding that decision, including the availability of other candidates and the needs of the leadership at that time.
