Fiji’s educational environment is increasingly challenged by issues such as drug abuse, violence, and various negative influences affecting students. At a recent biennial conference in Nausori, Govind Singh, president of the School Management Association of Fiji, emphasized the urgent need for a more holistic educational approach to foster character development among students. He proposed that upcoming budgets should allocate funds toward curriculum changes aimed at shaping not only students’ characters but also contributing to the nation’s future.
Singh expressed concern over the prevalence of violence and substance abuse in schools, stressing that these issues indicate a failure in character development within the educational system. Notably, he highlighted the unique context of Fiji, where over 90% of schools are operated by faith-based organizations, and the necessity of integrating community needs and values into school governance and programs.
Addressing the impact of drug use among students, Singh reminded attendees that educating a child is a communal responsibility, stating, “It cannot be left in the hands of the teachers alone.” He acknowledged the remarkable dedication of teachers but pointed out that the relationship between school management and local communities has deteriorated over the past decade. He also expressed disappointment that promised improvements in democratic governance and collaboration within school management structures are yet to be realized.
Lastly, Singh called for the reestablishment of the Education Forum, a platform aimed at enhancing collaboration among stakeholders in education.
