The Fijian Ministry of Education has introduced a new initiative aimed at promoting prayer and fasting in schools to enhance the teaching workforce through spiritual guidance. This initiative, detailed in a recent circular by acting permanent secretary Meli Nacuva, calls for schools to set aside a specific time each week for these practices, reinforcing the importance of spiritual well-being alongside academic pursuits. Nacuva noted that this effort is in accordance with Section 22 of the Fijian Constitution, which emphasizes the empowerment of teachers both structurally and spiritually.

Under the new program, school leaders can select a day for students and staff to participate in prayer and fasting. Students typically will not be required to fast unless they choose to participate, while prayer will be incorporated into the school routine, complementing periods of devotion or quiet reflection.

This initiative emerges during a time of increasing concern regarding the moral and ethical development in Fiji’s educational system. Govind Singh, president of the School Management Association of Fiji, recently underlined the critical need for spiritual leaders in schools, pointing out the negative effects that the absence of such figures has on student morality and the prevalence of social challenges faced by the youth. Singh’s call for a spiritual awakening in schools highlights the urgent requirement to integrate ethical teachings into educational experiences.

The movement to integrate spiritual guidance into education is further supported by various faith leaders who advocate for the embedding of moral values in schools. They argue that fostering ethical citizens starts within educational institutions, and a collective effort to instill these values can help mitigate issues like substance abuse and youth violence.

This focus on spirituality and moral education provides a promising avenue for the betterment of Fijian society, indicating that establishing a strong foundation of ethical values in schools may create a more supportive and nurturing environment for future generations. With committed support from the community and educational leaders, Fiji has the opportunity to guide its youth toward a more constructive and principled future.
