The School Management Association of Fiji is navigating ongoing challenges within the country’s education system. During the association’s biennial conference, President Govind Singh expressed concerns about their current position and the process of being included as a key stakeholder in education discussions.
Singh highlighted that the association previously facilitated programs focused on budgeting, financial management, resource allocation, infrastructural development, and governance for school management committees. However, these initiatives were halted in 2014 under the previous government. Despite a government change in 2022, Singh stated that the association continues to face obstacles in obtaining equal footing and opportunities for involvement.
One of the primary issues raised by Singh was the School Management Handbook, which he criticized for being imposed without proper consultation with the association and its committees. Although the association has held discussions with the Minister for Education, the Assistant Minister, and the permanent secretary, there is a sense of frustration over unconsulted decisions that impact their operational values and authority.
Moving forward, Singh reaffirmed the association’s commitment to voicing their objections against unilateral implementations that clash with their institutional principles.
This situation reflects the broader challenges faced by educational organizations in gaining a voice in governance, reminding us of the importance of collaboration and dialogue in effective educational reform. The ongoing engagement between the association and government representatives offers a glimmer of hope for future consultations, which could lead to a more inclusive approach to policymaking in the education sector.
In summary, while the School Management Association faces significant hurdles, their determination to advocate for their rights could ultimately foster a better collaborative environment for all stakeholders involved in the educational landscape in Fiji.
