The School Management Association of Fiji is navigating a challenging landscape within the country’s education sector. At the association’s biennial conference, President Govind Singh emphasized their ongoing struggle to gain proper recognition and accommodation in educational matters.
Historically, the association had conducted various programs focused on enhancing the capabilities of school management committees through training on budgeting, financial management, resource allocation, infrastructure development, and governance. However, these initiatives were halted in 2014 under the previous administration.
With the change in government in 2022, Singh expressed disappointment over the continued lack of equal stakeholder opportunities for the association. He highlighted the difficulties faced when school management bodies are not consulted during crucial decision-making processes. A particular concern mentioned is the School Management Handbook, which has been imposed on them without adequate input.
Despite having some discussions with the Minister for Education, Assistant Minister, and the permanent secretary, Singh noted that the association remains committed to opposing any unilateral policies that conflict with their values and principles.
This situation, while challenging, opens up avenues for dialogue and collaboration. The association’s determination to advocate for its members could lead to a more inclusive and representative educational framework in the future. This perseverance and willingness to engage with policymakers can ultimately foster positive change, encouraging a more collaborative approach to the needs of schools in Fiji.
