Fiji’s Sanitation Services: A 72% Challenge Ahead

Only 28 percent of Fiji’s population currently has access to sanitation services, according to Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau. In response, the government is initiating a comprehensive program aimed at expanding sanitation services to the remaining 72 percent of the population.

During a recent parliamentary session, Ro Filipe announced that tenders for master plans will be publicly advertised in the coming weeks. He emphasized the pressing need to enhance the wastewater program, outlining several critical projects including the rehabilitation of the Pacific Harbour Wastewater Treatment Plant, improvements to the Kinoya Wastewater Treatment Plant, and the installation of new diffusers at the Wailada Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Additionally, Ro Filipe highlighted the status of water catchments, noting that certain areas in the Western Division and maritime islands are experiencing critical water levels. Although 14 out of 17 water catchments in the Central Division have improved due to recent heavy rainfall, some regions in the Lomaiviti Group continue to face critical conditions. In the Western Division, three water sources remain at critical levels, while eight have returned to normal.

He advised all residents to conserve water and practice prudent water usage. The Northern Division also reported low water pressure, but with less intense rainfall, some areas are still in need of assistance.
