Sakiusa Bainivalu, a Year 12 student from Queen Victoria School, is set to represent Fiji at the 2025 Asian Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This prestigious event, scheduled for January 17-20, 2025, brings together youth leaders from across the globe to collaborate on solving pressing world issues. It is organized by the International Global Network (IGN).
Sakiusa expressed his enthusiasm for this unique opportunity, as it marks his first time representing Fiji in such a significant forum. “This is a huge breakthrough for me. To be selected out of thousands of participants and to be around other people and share thoughts and opinions is phenomenal,” he reflected.
He earned his place at the conference after submitting an essay addressing social challenges in Fiji, including domestic violence, rising drug issues, and the loss of cultural identity. In his essay, Sakiusa emphasized how this experience could help him grow into a productive and inspirational leader.
His parents made a financial commitment of U.S. $779 (FJ$1785) to cover his travel expenses, including accommodation, transportation, and meals. Looking ahead, Sakiusa has aspirations to pursue a degree in medicine, focusing on non-communicable diseases upon his return.
This opportunity not only provides Sakiusa with a platform to voice his opinions and learn from others but also showcases the potential of youth involvement in global discussions. His journey may inspire other young leaders to engage actively in addressing both local and international issues.
In summary, Sakiusa’s participation in the AYIMUN represents a significant personal achievement and highlights the importance of youth involvement in global dialogues, encouraging a generation of aspiring leaders to collaborate for a better world.
