Sakiusa Bainivalu, a Year 12 student from Queen Victoria School, is thrilled to represent Fiji at the 2025 Asian Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This esteemed event, which takes place from January 17-20, gathers young leaders from around the globe, offering them a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and perspectives on pressing global issues.
Sakiusa is particularly enthusiastic about this event as it marks his first experience in representing Fiji on such a platform. Hailing from Tabuya, Nabukelevu-ira in Kadavu, he described his selection as a significant milestone, expressing, “This is a huge breakthrough for me. To be selected out of thousands of participants and to be around other people and share thoughts and opinions is phenomenal.”
His journey to the conference began with a competitive essay submission addressing crucial social issues in Fiji, including domestic violence, the rise of illicit drug use, and cultural loss. In his essay, he articulated his views on how attending the International MUN conference could shape him into an effective and motivational leader.
To facilitate his participation, Sakiusa’s parents have financed the trip, amounting to U.S. $779 (FJ $1785), which covers his accommodation, transportation, and meals during the event. Following this experience, he plans to pursue a medical degree specializing in non-communicable diseases upon his return.
This event presents an excellent opportunity not just for Sakiusa but also for other young leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue about societal challenges. His enthusiasm reflects a positive spirit of youth empowerment and a commitment to fostering change. Such platforms are pivotal in nurturing the next generation of leaders who are well-equipped to address the complex issues faced by their communities and the world.
