Sakiusa Bainivalu, a Year 12 student at Queen Victoria School, is set to represent Fiji at the 2025 Asian Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This prestigious event, scheduled for January 17-20, is designed to gather youth leaders from around the globe to engage in discussions aimed at addressing pressing world issues.
Sakiusa expressed his enthusiasm for this unique opportunity, highlighting that it will be his first time representing Fiji in such a significant setting. Hailing from Tabuya, Nabukelevu-ira, Kadavu, he described his selection from a pool of thousands as a remarkable achievement. “This is a huge breakthrough for me. To be selected out of thousands of participants and to be around other people and share thoughts and opinions is phenomenal,” he stated.
His journey to AYIMUN began with a compelling essay where he addressed various social challenges facing Fiji, including domestic violence, rising drug-related issues, and the loss of cultural identity. Through this essay, he conveyed his belief that participating in the International MUN conference would foster his development as a leader who can inspire change.
To make this trip possible, Sakiusa’s parents contributed U.S. $779 (FJ $1,785) to cover his travel expenses, which include accommodation, food, and transportation. Looking ahead, Sakiusa hopes to pursue a career in medicine, with a focus on non-communicable diseases upon his return.
This participation not only marks a significant milestone for Sakiusa but also represents an exciting opportunity for young Fijians to engage in global discussions and build important leadership skills. The experience could pave the way for further involvement in international affairs and cultural exchange.
Overall, Sakiusa’s achievement is a testament to the potential of youth to effect change in their communities and beyond, reminding us of the importance of supporting young leaders in their endeavors.
