A public safety partnership was officially launched today between Telecom Fiji and the Fiji Police Force, unveiling the “Safe City Project” covering the Suva-Nausori corridor. The agreement, formalized on May 21, 2025, aims to enhance security through advanced technology including high-speed fibre-optic connectivity and a network of CCTV cameras throughout the region.
The live video feeds from the CCTV system will be monitored at the Fiji Police Command Centre, located at the Central Police Station in Suva. This initiative is focused on improving crime prevention strategies, facilitating quicker police responses, and reinforcing public trust in law enforcement by integrating smart surveillance systems.
Telecom Fiji’s CEO, Charles Goundar, described the project as a crucial development for creating safer communities, emphasizing the transformative role of technology in modernizing public safety. Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu echoed this sentiment, noting that real-time monitoring capabilities would enhance the police’s ability to deter and respond to criminal activities effectively.
Originally designed for the Suva-Nausori corridor, the Safe City model is anticipated to expand to other major centers, laying the groundwork for a nationwide public safety network. This project reflects Fiji’s commitment to leveraging technology for enhanced security measures, which is increasingly important in addressing contemporary crime challenges.
