The Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji has expressed strong condemnation regarding the recent vandalism that occurred at the Wainibuku Cemetery in Nakasi. National President Dhirendra Nand classified the incident as “shameful,” highlighting the disturbing nature of the vandals’ actions, which involved using fire from a previous cremation to set the cemetery ablaze. This act is viewed as a serious affront to the deceased, their families, and the values of Sanatan Dharm.
Nand called upon the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible face justice. He emphasized that such acts of vandalism are not only disrespectful to religious customs but also harm the dignity of individuals and communities. The sentiments of the followers of Sanatan Dharm across Fiji have been deeply affected, prompting a call for unity in maintaining the sanctity of religious spaces.
This incident is part of a troubling trend of disrespect towards places of worship and sacred texts in Fiji, similar to previous occurrences involving vandalism and sacrilege at other religious sites, such as the vandalism at the Vunicuicui Shiv Mandir and the theft at Jai Hind Prahaat Ramayan Faag Mandali temple. These recent incidents raise concerns about community harmony and respect across diverse faiths.
There is, however, an opportunity for communities to come together in dialogue and mutual respect, emphasizing the importance of preserving the sanctity of all religious sites. Through collective efforts, Fijians can promote understanding and build stronger connections among different cultural and religious communities, fostering a hopeful and united future.
