Farmers in Fiji’s rural areas are set to benefit significantly from new road constructions aimed at improving access to their farms. The government, under the Rural and Outer Island Program, has completed the construction of 30 farm access roads totaling 152.4 kilometers across 11 provinces, with an investment of approximately $2.2 million. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to enhance rural infrastructure and support local communities.

In particular, the Northern Division boasts 64.38 kilometers of newly constructed roads, assisting 1,664 residents. Similarly, the Western Division has added 28 kilometers of roadways that benefit 1,724 individuals, while 14.6 kilometers in the Eastern Division support 1,120 community members. Notably, a 7.5-kilometer road on Moala Island is specifically designed to assist Yaqona farmers in reaching their farms more efficiently. The Central Division’s addition of 45.5 kilometers serves to enhance access for 2,150 residents.

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, emphasizes that these infrastructure improvements are vital for elevating the livelihoods of farmers, women, and vulnerable groups throughout Fiji. The government is committed to investing in essential rural infrastructure to foster development and connectivity, reflecting a hopeful vision for a more integrated and resilient rural Fiji.

This initiative aligns with past government commitments to uplift rural communities through better infrastructure. Recent projects, such as the enhancements on Lakeba Island and the ongoing upgrades in the Northern Division, underscore a comprehensive strategy to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas. There is a clear momentum building within the government that indicates ongoing efforts will continue to produce tangible benefits for these communities, leading to enhanced economic opportunities and improved living standards.

With these developments, the future looks promising for rural farmers in Fiji as they gain better access to essential services and markets, thereby contributing to a healthier agricultural economy and resilient communities.
