Fiji is currently facing a growing drug crisis, which has raised alarm, especially during the prestigious Nawaka 7s rugby tournament at Prince Charles Park. Recent discoveries of needles and drug paraphernalia at the venue have sparked serious concerns about substance abuse in sports. Eparama Sailo, the tournament’s Executive Director, has taken a definitive stance against drugs in athletics, emphasizing that “Drugs have no place in sports.”

In light of these developments, the Nawaka 7s is collaborating closely with the Fiji Police Force to enhance security measures and combat drug use in and around the event. Sailo has launched a “Say No to Drugs” campaign, aiming to uphold the integrity of rugby and promote an environment of discipline and fair play among players and fans.

To reinforce security efforts, Divisional Police Commander West Iakobo Vaisewa announced that police will conduct random checks at the tournament venue following the arrest of two individuals linked to drug activities near the event. Increased police presence will be established both inside and outside the venue to ensure safety and order.

These efforts are part of a larger commitment across Fiji, where similar concerns were voiced during past tournaments like the Fiji Bitter Mataso Nakorovou 7s. Organizers of these events have consistently highlighted the importance of promoting a drug-free environment, recognizing the events not only showcase athletic talent but also serve as platforms for advocating healthy lifestyles among the youth.

Initiatives like these reflect a hopeful outlook for the future, as they aim to inspire young athletes to make positive choices that divert them away from drug use and towards prosperous futures in both sports and life. The collaboration between tournament organizers and law enforcement illustrates a collective dedication to safeguarding the essence of sports and the welfare of the community.
