Fiji’s Rugby Strategy: Mixing It Up in the Pacific Nations Cup

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is exploring various combinations within his 28-member squad during the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC). In an interview, Byrne emphasized that the interplay between the forwards and backs is consistently developing.

“It’s a small squad, 28 isn’t a large number,” he remarked. “We have our backs and possibly one or two extra, allowing everyone to participate in various combinations.”

Byrne mentioned that while he is unsure about the final combinations as the competition progresses, the current focus remains a work in progress. “We’re working through this and ensuring everyone has an opportunity. No one is sidelined,” he noted.

Byrne acknowledged the challenges they will face against Tonga next Friday. “Competing in Fiji, Samoa, or Tonga presents similar challenges. We understand the fervent support for home teams in the Pacific Islands,” he explained. “It will be good pressure for us; we need to remain focused on our goals and block out any distractions.”

Burly prop Ben Tameifuna will lead Tonga as they gear up for their PNC opener against Samoa in Apia, a crucial match for both teams.
